George Bainborough was killed in action when the 4th Suffolks were trying to stem the Japanese invasion of Singapore, which had started on the 8th February. The fighting was fierce, and very often hand-to-hand.

 George Bainborough has no known grave and is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial – very near to where he was killed.
