Service
The Royal Artillery supplied Gunners to protect the Marine Ships - Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships (DEMS).
Henry was a Gunner on board SS Stornest
1942/10/12 - The SS Stornest had fell behind the ONS-136 convoy West of Ireland.
A German U-boat followed the ship awaiting it’s chance and fired a torpedo which hit the Stonest causing severe damage.
In a gale it was impossible to launch the lifeboats as they were blown away, so the 49 members of the gunners and crew had to jump into the water, hoping for a quick rescue.
Unfortunately it did not come and as it was October they died very quickly in very cold water, there were no survivors.
