HOOTON, Leading Patrolman, CHARLES PERCY, C/MX 767058. H.M.S. Tamar. Royal Navy. 20th July 1946. Age 24. Son of Charles and Florence Hooton; husband of Daphne Winifred Hooton, of Hassocks, Sussex. Sec. 17B. 10300.

 

HOPWOOD, Serjeant, PERCY GEORGE, 6196351. 1st Bn. Middlesex Regiment. 16th February 1940. Sec. 16D. 9904.

 

HUGHES, Driver, JOSEPH, G C, T/14858103. Royal Army Service Corps. 23rd March 1946. Age 19. Sec. 16D. 10265. The citation in the London gazette for 26th June 1947, gives the following details: "The King has been graciously pleased to approve the posthumous award of the George Cross, in recognition of most conspicuous gallantry in carrying out hazardous work in a very brave manner."

Dvr. Hughes was driving a three ton lorry full of ammunition and explosives into the Lyemun Barracks, Hong Kong, when he noticed the load was on fire. Instead of running for safety he did everything possible to put out the fire and shouted to warn all others to clear the area. He was killed when the whole load exploded but he had saved many lives with his warnings.
