Tom was a Merchant Seaman and was in a convoy which was attacked, his ship was hit by torpedoes. With the survivors Tom was picked up by an Italian ship and taken to the nearest port to wait for a ship home. Instead Tom joined the Border Regiment and fought in Burma.

3rd April 1945
Tom died in the Burma jungle, his body being cremated and with others buried at Taukkyan War Cemetery in a collective grave.
