1941/12/08 - The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour and invaded Malaya and Hong Kong.
1942/08/13 - WO 417/48, Casualty List No. 901. Previously shown on Casualty List No. 723 as Missing, 25/12/1941. Now reported a ‘Prisoner of War’.
1943/06/24 - WO 417/62, Casualty List No 1169. Previously reported on Casualty List No 901 as Prisoner of War now reported Missing, Hong Kong.

On 27th September 1942 the Lisbon Maru left Hong Kong for Shanghai with 1816 prisoners on board. Frederick was in Hold Two.

On the third day at sea Diphtheria broke out.
1942/10/01 - A noise like air rushing out of a tyre woke the sleeping PoWs and they realised a torpedo had just missed the ship. A few minutes later there was a loud explosion and the ships engines stopped.
She was Torpedoed on 1st October by USS Grouper, 6 miles from Tung Fusham Island, off the China coast, 29°57'N, 122°56'N.

On the 2nd October 1942 the Lisbon Maru sank.
James died in the sinking of the Lisbon Maru.
