Very Seriously Injured during an operational mission.
While serving as a Rear Air Gunner in a Vickers Warwick ASR out of Akyab, Burma, he was positioned in the tail turret. Jack bore the brunt of the impact, resulting in injuries from which he never fully recovered, including the loss of both legs.

In recognition of his courage, he was promoted to Pilot Officer on 16 August 1945 while still hospitalized.

Jack spent a total of sixteen months in military hospitals across the Far East and the UK before finally returning home to Belfast in September 1946. During this time, he demonstrated the resilience that would define the rest of his life.
