1942/04/04 - Oversea in Nissyo Maru to Saigon, French Indo-China with 1118 PoWs (All Ranks) called ‘Saigon Battalion’

1942/04/09 - Arrived Saigon with half the PoWs down with dysentery because of the bad conditions on board the Nissyo Maru

Worked on docks unloading cargo

Escapes:- Baxter & Cassidy. Strong rumours in the camp that they were captured after 36 hours of freedom, brought back to Saigon and executed.

 

1943/06/22 - Transported overland to Thailand with 700 PoWs under Lt-Col. Hugonin

Steamer from Saigon to Mekong River, where they were barged across to Phnom Penh. There followed a very long 400 mile train journey to Bangkok.

1943/06/29 - No. 2 Jungle camp Kinsaiyok (Camp Ldr. Hugonin)

PoW No. IV 43436

Lt-Col. Hugonin protested to the Japanese about the shortage of food. They threatened to shoot him if he protested again but he stood firm. He was well respected by the men under him.

1943/07/24 -  Kinsaiyok. (Camp Commander Lt. Col. Lilley)(159km from Nong Pladuk)

 

 1944/07/14 - Transported to River Valley Camp, Singapore

1944/09/04 - Oversea to Japan in Kachidoki Maru, Japan Party 3.

With 900 PoWs

1944/09/12 - Attacked by the USS Pampanito submarine near East Hainan Island and sunk. All those who survived the sinking jumped within the first 10 minutes of the Kachidoki Maru being hit. William did not make it.

 

1944/09/12 - WO392/25, Missing on board ship.

1945/04/17 - WO417/90.1, Casualty List No. 1725. Previously reported Prisoner of War in Japanese hands, €“ Malaya on Casualty List No. 964 (Corrected by 1273). Now reported ‘Missing at Sea’.
