In 1938, at the outbreak of WWII, the 1st Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers were serving in Singapore.
They them were moved to Hill Station of Wellington in Southern India. shortly after the move the Inniskillings completed jungle warfare training in Meerut, Northern India.
When Japan entered the War on the 8th December 1941, the 1st Battalion took part in the defence of Burma but were soon pushed back towards India by the already hardened Japanese forces who had all ready taken Rangoon in March 1942.
Yenangyaung was important to the Japanese for its oil fields, and they reached the oil fields by the 16th April 1942. Fearing the Japanese had encircled the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, the Battle of Yenangyaung took place.
The Battle Honour YENANGYAUN, was awarded to The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers for actions by the 1st Battalion, The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in Burma (Myanmar).
It was during the Battle of Yenangyaung that Nicholas was reported ‘Missing’ and was later reported ‘Killed in Action’.
