Michael Freeman’s grandfather, Bobbie Waddle, was an electrical engineer, and along with other "public servants" as referred to in the official report, was not put in Changi immediately, but kept elsewhere whilst they kept utilities operating. He was finally put in Changi on Boxing Day 1942, only to be removed as one of the "Double Tenth", being an engineer suspected of making a radio... He was returned in 1944 and ended up in Sime Rd. He made films in Singapore from 1931 until his retirement back to the UK in 1958.
He lost his wife, who was headmistress of Raffles Girls School, in the sinking of the Vyner Brooke. He was also the organist of St Andrews Cathedral for many years. The film and camera was hidden in the organ pipes of the cathedral to survive the war. The man with the "turban" near the start is Wilf Ball, and another name I have is Kent. Cannot identify the others.
The film is just over 4 minutes in length. What is unusual about this is that it was filmed in September 1942 whilst in internment.
