The road was a backup supply route for the Japanese to Burma if the Railway was put out of commission.
The road construction ran from Pratchuap Khiri Khan, Thailand to Mergui, Burma in a mountainous region. The PoWs were already in poor health with vitamin deficiency. For many it was one step too far for them.
