The SS Harpa was bombed on 22nd December 1941 at the beginning of the Malayan Campaign at Port Swettenham, with the loss of four Engineering Officers, one of which was Gordon.

- L.H.J. Woodbridge, Third Engineer Officer. Died 28th December 1941. Age 22. Son of Harry Frederick and Alice Woodbridge, of Brentford, Middlesex. Grave 718.
The SS Harpa was later sunk 1942/01/27 when it hit a British mine in the Singapore Main Strait on its way to Batavia, Java. The tanker was fully loaded with aviation fuel. With the loss of 34 of the crew.
