US Tang fired its torpedoes at the escorts then at the Tomahoko Maru, but left the other PoW transports alone as their intelligence had informed them, they carried PoWs, not knowing that the Tonahoko Maru now had PoWs on board. The Torpedoes hit the Tamahoko Maru  in the forward hold and amidships.

1944/06/25 - At 10 am ships arrived to take the Japanese of the sinking Tamahoko Maru, the PoWs were left as last to be picked up, but there was an explosion and the ship sank quickly. 560 PoW lives were lost including Charles.
